How To Prepare Your Water Softener For The Holidays

Is your Water Softener ready for the holidays? With the holiday season just around the corner, here are a few tips and tricks to ensure you and your guests have clean, comfortable water.

Have Enough Salt

The average person is estimated to use 75 gallons of water per day. If you are having the entire family over to visit for a few days, you will have more people taking showers, brushing their teeth, and flushing toilets. You may also be running more loads of laundry and the dishwasher more frequently. If you have a water softener programmed to regenerate based on how much water is used (a “metered” softener) it will regenerate more frequently and use more salt than what you’re used to. We recommend that you pick up a few extra bags of salt, just in case!

Watch Your Well

With all of those extra people using water, it can place additional stress on your well. The extra water usage may deplete the water in your well faster than nature can replenish it, causing you to run out of water. If you suspect this has happened, turn off the breaker to your well pump. This will allow the pump to “rest” and not try to fill up your pressure tank until it reaches the proper cut out pressure. Let it sit for at least an hour, then turn the breaker back on.

No Water Usage During Regenerations

Remind your guests that they cannot use water when your water treatment equipment is regenerating. If they do, this will bring untreated water into the house and may result in discoloration, odor, and poor taste/smell. If you have a water softener and water is used while it is drawing brine (salt solution) from the brine tank, you can get salty water that burns your eyes and skin. Unless you have requested otherwise, water softeners are programmed to regenerate at 2:00 AM, and acid neutralizers regenerate at midnight.

If you think a guest accidentally flushed a toilet or got a drink of water in the middle of the night, you may have to put your equipment through a manual regeneration. Our trained office staff would be happy to talk you through it, or you can watch a video tutorial on our website at: www.h2oequipment.com/blog/videos
