Water in Connecticut

Water Usage in CT

We sure are lucky here in Connecticut. We don’t have water restrictions, no mandatory water conservation, no mandatory recycling of grey water.

In fact, we barely recognize our abundance of water until we lose power. We have so much water that we water our lawns, fill our Jacuzzi tubs, and flush our toilets- even ignore the drip, drip, drip of our leaky faucets without a second thought. But consider these facts:

  • The average person uses 75 gallons of water PER day – that’s 27,375 gallons per year!
  • The average family of four uses 300 gallons per DAY – or 109,500 gallons per year!
  • A leaky faucet WASTES 170 gallons of water per DAY – or  62,050 gallons per year
  • The average person uses 20 gallons of water per day just to brush their teeth (assuming you brush twice a day) – or 7,300 gallons per year!

The Department of Public Health recommends “Water Saving Options” like taking a shorter shower, and turning the water off when you brush your teeth. If we all agreed to this we could potentially save thousands of gallons of water per year per person! So let’s fix those leaky faucets and brush with the water off. Let’s do it for the other unlucky people out there in those other, less fortunate states and countries.

Fun Fact: There are an estimated 3,590,347 people in Connecticut. If we all did our best to conserve, even for one day, we could save millions of gallons of water!
